Tom Brady is about to play in his 9th Super Bowl in 18 years. He is the only QB to win 5 championships, and at age 41 he has better passing stats than when he went to his first one way back in 2001.
Success always breeds some measure of contempt but the level
of anger focused on Brady and the Patriots is unrivalled anywhere else in
sports.
With that in mind, let me give you a few reasons why you
should love Tom Brady. (Just like I do)
1) Tom is the anti-
Alpha Male. He Wins Because he Works Harder Than Everyone Else. Not Because He
is Bigger or Better Than Everyone Else
Brady was a backup during his college days, only starting in
20 games during his 4 year career. He entered the NFL as the 199th
pick of the draft in the 6th round, going to a team with an
unquestioned #1 at QB already in Drew Bledsoe.
Tom has regularly been the secondary story all of his career, playing
second chair at different times to Rob Gronkowski, Teddy Bruschi, Adam
Vinatieri and of course Bill Belichick.
He has been labelled a “system QB” only getting by by hard
work.
Why would you hate a small, un-athletic guy who wins only
because he tries more? Isn’t that the story
we want to tell in all of our sports? The Tortoise and the Hare. Rudy. Miracle
on Ice. Sometimes the underdog can work just hard enough to beat the bigger,
stronger, more confident athlete.
2) Tom has made us
all better athletes.
At the turn of the century, athletes were still regularly
using steroids, and thought a good steak and a Coors light was a recovery meal.
Brady has his meals, workouts and rest days mapped out 365 days ahead of him.
He abstains from alcohol, and foods that cause swelling in his body. He was one
of the first athletes with a personal trainer that travelled with the team to
make sure that he worked out best for his
body, not just a football guy
workout. He emphasized stretching over weights, recovery, and proper nutrition.
Before the year 2000 I’m not even sure I knew what an Avocado was, and I
certainly had never tasted Kale before. Now even as a weekend warrior, when I
go into pre-race prep I stock the cupboard with good fats, healthy proteins, avocados
and more to make sure I am properly fuelling myself.
He says he’ll still be playing at age 45. At this pace, why
would you doubt him?
3) Tom cares more
about team than Himself.
Here is a (partial) list of QB’s making more salary than Tom
Brady:
Jimmy Garoppolo
Matt Stafford
Dereck Carr
Joe Flacco
Kirk Cousins
Alex Smith
Matt Ryan
For the past three seasons, Tom has taken a pay cut to allow
the team to hold onto or bring in players that will make his team better,
rather than piling on 4-5 million more a season. He’d rather pile more players
os he can keep winning.
· He
cares about winning. SO much. You
see it in his reactions in the good and the bad.
· Yes
he got caught deflating the ball. By 1 PSI. So did the Steelers. In the
preseason. So did almost every kicker and QB in the league, which is why a
different ball is brought on for each play and for possession changes, But we
love to hate Brady, so we had a lawsuit and another “gate”
· Brady
stays out of the media for the most part, devoting time to his family. He has
played his entire career for one organization, one coach and one owner. He is
loyal.
He stands out by far as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time)
We should love him.
But not you. You hate him. You hate him because he beat your
team (insert name of basically every AFC team and 6 NFC teams)
Don't hate great. Appreciate
