In a world where new is almost always viewed as better, I
was reminded yesterday that there is power in “same” In fact 9 times out of 10,
without be aware of it, we actually prefer “same” more than we prefer “new”.
SAME IS CELEBRATED.
We honour couples who have stayed together for 50 years much
more than couples who were married 5 times for 10 years each.
SAME BUILDS TRADITION.
All Christmas we participated in traditions that have been
the same for 30 years. We watched claymation Rudolph, decorated with Grandma’s
ceramic mini tree & sang song’s and lit candles as was done in the 18th
century.
SAME GIVES US CONFIDENCE.
We buy the same brands of toothpaste, bread, underwear and
cars. We like getting our coffee from the same barista and we sit in the same seat
each week at church.
That which is familiar to us gives us a greater confidence
that it will make us happy again.
We cheer for the same sports team regardless of who plays
for them and how good they are. Just ask anyone from Cleveland. We listen to certain
musicians because we like them, not necessarily because they are still making
good music. There are too many current Bruce Springsteen fans. TV shows might
go a whole season without producing a really goo episode, but we watch because
that’s one of our shows. CSI has built a multi-multi series dynasty on this
premise.
In fact one of the greatest claims that we can make about
Jesus Christ is that he is the same, yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews13:8)
Let’s make 2015 a year where we dedicate longevity to our
jobs, our marriages, our communities and our churches. Stop looking for what
something new might offer, and start realizing what same has already given you.
