Making New Years Resoltuions Stick Beyond Groundhog Day

What resolutions did you make this year… and honestly how long do you figure you can keep it up? Every year millions of people makes promises to themselves to start exercising, read more or quit smoking. By February, it seems like 90 percent of people have given up and returned to their former ways. So what makes the difference between those who persevere, and those who end up back on the couch, watching reality TV smoking?

Yesterday I read a story about a man and his wife who were trying to get pregnant. It seemed like it just wasn’t ever going to happen for them. Every day they would pray to God for a child and resolve that this was the time when things were going to be different. But year after year, things remained the same. It seemed like their faith was futile, and their passion for difference was useless. Then one day following one of his regular prayers for a child, he got an answer. An angel showed up and said “Don’t be afraid, because God has heard you prayers.”

Kinda freaky? Yes
Does it give me hope for my life? Totally.

To me that’s what makes the difference. So many of us are afraid that we’re doing all of this alone. It’s scary to think that we need to figure out this life, and make all the necessary changes and adaptations via our own will power. Yet for those of us who believe that our prayers are not unheard, it’s that faith that pushes us to persevere.

So what did you resolve to do in 2010?
Are you going at it alone, or do you believe that your hopes and dreams are heard and known by the God who created the world, and cares individually for each person?
I know that makes keeping at it a lot easier for me.
